CMA-US Stands as Voice for American Service Members at International Military Conference
MANILA, Philippines — Representing the thousands of Catholic service members, veterans, and families of the United States, the Catholic Military Apostolate of the United States (CMA-US) joined delegates from nearly 40 nations for the Apostolat Militaire International (AMI) 60th Anniversary Conference. Hosted by the Military Ordinariate of the Philippines from September 21–26, 2025, the assembly gathered under the timely theme: “Strengthening Christian Values within the Armed Forces through Biblical Leadership, Building Bridges, and Increased Resilience.”.
A Milestone for the Lay Apostolate
As a lay organization officially sanctioned by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, the participation of CMA-US in Manila underscores its vital role in the global "Christian vision of military life". The conference provided a unique platform for CMA-US to share the American experience of fostering Catholic culture within the ranks while learning from international counterparts about supporting families during deployment and strengthening spiritual resilience in the face of modern security challenges.
Honoring Extraordinary Service
A significant highlight for the American delegation was the recognition of Chaplain (Brigadier General) Patrick J. Dolan, a key figure in the U.S. Army National Guard chaplaincy. During the proceedings, Fr. Dolan was honored by the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation with the Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award.
This prestigious award commemorates the legacy of the four U.S. Army chaplains—including Catholic priest Fr. John P. Washington—who famously gave up their life jackets to save others during the 1943 sinking of the USAT Dorchester. Fr. Dolan’s recognition serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of "sacrificial service" that CMA-US strives to cultivate among all its members.
Looking Forward
The insights gained from the AMI assembly in Manila will directly inform CMA-US’s national initiatives, particularly in the areas of:
Biblical Leadership: Developing resources for officers and NCOs to lead with a servant’s heart.
Resilience: Integrating Catholic spirituality into military mental health and wellness programs.
Global Solidarity: Strengthening ties with military apostolates in the UK, Canada, and beyond.
“Our presence here in the Philippines is a reminder that the American military Catholic does not walk alone,” noted the CMA-US delegation. “We are part of a global community of ‘Missionary Disciples’ committed to sanctifying military life and bringing the peace of Christ to every corner of the world.”.
